Compline

Compline (Night prayer)

The form of the service here is one that is specifically set for this coming week as we move through Ascensiontide towards Pentecost Sunday. We are all encouraged to renew our prayer for the gift of the Holy Spirit during this season, and it may be that using this form of Compline in the evenings of this week may be a way for some of us to do that. You might want to add the Lord's Prayer, which is optional in Compline, but always vital prayer of us in our personal prayer lives.

Huge thanks to our Lizzie for a major effort in producing this, to Alison for her singing and Lewis for his piano playing. The images I've used are from Farlam Church, since it has a fine horse chestnut in blossom (the blossoms are known as 'Ascension Candles') and it also has an Ascension window in the sanctuary.

Sunday after Ascension

Sunday after Ascension

Dear All,

Today is the Sunday between Ascension and Pentecost - Easter 7. Please find below a selection of links for local worship.

First of all a 5 minute reflection on today's reading from the Acts of the Apostles, given by Bishop Peter Ramsden:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe0dteAK_JY

Secondly, from the Lanercost benefice, a service of hymns, readings, prayers and an address by Revd Angela Hughes:

Thirdly, Revd Rob Brown, the parish priest in the Bewcastle benefice, is posting daily services of Morning Prayer with readings from Bede's 'Life of Cuthbert'. Here is the link for the first one:

To continue to access these daily services visit www.bewcastlehouseofprayer.org.uk

From our own six parishes we will be posting a service of Compline later today. Look out for an email coming to you later on with the link.

This week I'm continuing with a second round of 'not-on-Sunday Sunday schools' by zoom - we have 15 families participating. Ruth our Youth Church leader is also having session with young people from the Brampton area on zoom.

I am now going into each parish church during the week to say the Morning / Evening Prayer: Monday 9am - Cumrew; Tues 5pm - Talkin; Wed 9am - Cumwhitton; Thurs 5pm Castle Carrock; Friday 9am Farlam; the other slots at Hayton. I will be in touch shortly with suggestions and material for ways people in each parish could pray 'with' me - in their own homes of course - at these times.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Christian Aid online collections. It's looking as though there were technical problems with the totalling of donations made from our six parishes through the e-envelopes, so we may not get a final figure and may not know whether we reached our £500 target, however adding the donations from the Just Giving page to those recorded on the e-envelopes before the tech problems - we know that we did make at least £460. I'm certain that that we will have beaten the £500 but it's frustrating we can't know for sure! But the important thing is that all the donations made have gone through to support communities in desperate need.

God bless - keep well,

Ascension Day

Greetings on Ascension Day.

Yours truly preaching
Revd Rachel and Steve Williams interceding
Revd Peter Dixon and Val Tyler reading

See if you can recognise the photos of various churches from round the deanery! But I'll give one away - the church with the 'Ascension Candles' (i.e. the horse chestnut blossoms) in the foreground is Talkin!

Also attached a transcript of the service compiled by Barbara Riches.

Rogation Sunday

Happy Rogation Sunday!

Here's a link to a Rogation Family Service. Just to re-assure everyone that Lewis wasn't damaged in the beating-the-bounds ritual! And huge thanks to Helen and Fi for 'Great is thy Faithfulness' and to Oscar & Kasper, Joe & Jake, Leon, Tom & Joe & Sam & Harry, Lucy & Megan, Emily, Henry, John & Katie & Joe, Eve and Jack for their contributions!

The service includes a reminder of Christian Aid Week which ends this weekend. Unfortunately we don't yet know how much has been given through the e-envelopes as the 'totaliser' isn't letting us know - it says £30 but we know for a fact much more than that has been donated. I've been in touch with Christian Aid who said the totalisers hadn't been working - but assuring us that all donations made through e-envelopes have been received. And we should learn the full amount this week. So far the Just Giving site has received £270 so we're hopeful the e-envelopes will get us nearer or even over that £500 mark! You can still give:

And also being broadcast today:

BBC One 10.45am ‘Sunday Worship’ – The Very Revd Dr Sarah Rowland Jones, Dean of St David’s, leads the service from the Cathedral in Pembrokeshire. This was filmed before the closure of all church buildings was announced and uses hymns recorded for Songs of Praise in 2019.
BBC One 1.15pm Songs of Praise – ‘Modern Hymn Writers’: Aled Jones talks with Ken Burton and hears how hymn singing brings hope in troubled times.

We'll send out a deanery Ascension Day Servcie on Thursday.

God bless and keep safe.

Christian Aid week

Christian Aid Week

Dear All,

Christian Aid Week begins today. And while we can't raise funds in the usual ways, it is vital we find ways to support Christian Aid at a time when the world's poorest communities are suffering even more because of the coronavirus.

Over the years our 6 parishes have often managed to get close to raising £500 in Christian Aid Week (our top three results were £460 in 2017; £482 in 2012; and then almost there with £494 in 2015). But it's good to have a target, so let's go for the £500 this year! The first option is to give on the Just Giving page (more than happy for people to donate anonymously): Read More…
